$194,000 Gift Duty Owing
Well, I thought it would never happen. Labour had actually handed over the $824,524 to the Parliamentary Service.
Of course, having legalised the misspending, there was no legal debt. The Parliamentary Service under Margaret Wilson’s guidance never asked for the money back. As such, the $824,524 given to the Parliamentary Service is a gift.

At the rates detailed in the Inland Revenue’s Gift Duty Guide (IR194, PDF), my calculations have the Labour party owing $193,850 in gift duty. Here’s hoping that Inland Revenue is as vicious towards the Labour party as it is towards more productive members of society.
UPDATE: A correspondent has pointed out that Jeanette Fitzsimons agrees that the payment is “a gift, not a debt”.

Can legal action be taken privately to ensure any payable duty is recovered from these untrustworthy and thoroughly corrupt scumbags ??
Would the other parties who have paid monies back be in the same situation with respect to gift duty ?

Anyone whose gift was greater than $27,000 (see the chart above) should be liable. For example, the Greens at $87,000 owe about $10,000 in gift duty. By far the biggest penalty goes to Labour, the biggest abuser. The biggest thieves owe the most duty and the enablers who helped them pass their filthy get-out-of-jail-free legislation - United Future, New Zealand First, and the Greens - are the only others who would have to pay this duty. Poetic justice indeed.

I wondered if all those people who donated large sums to political parties at the last election paid their gift duties.

I e-mailed snake oil Dunne but unsurprisingly received no reply, so I have now requested my National MP to ask a written question and for proof the money has been repaid. Hopefully this request will fall on more receptive ears.

Are you going to backtrack on the headline “Labour to Break Repayment Promise”. Seeing as they paid it and all.
